After an intense process, I share here the materials of the Campaign for the Prevention and Detection of Child Sexual Abuse in Sports “Child Sexual Abuse Stays Offside” (in Spanish Campaña de Prevención y Detección del Abuso Sexual Infantil en el Deporte “El abuso sexual infantil queda fuera de juego”) created by F. Javier Romeo y Pepa Horno for the Spanish High Council for Sport (Consejo Superior de Deportes) and the Fundación Deporte Joven.

As a good practice in sports, the process has involved a big amount of teamwork. For me, it has been an honour meeting authorities, specialists and athletes, and visiting public and private sports facilities, both elite and grassroot spaces, and so many different sports. I am grateful to the teams at the High Council for Sports and the Fundación Deporte Joven for their role in coordinating and monitoring everything. I have a deep gratitude too for the specialists that have taken part in the preparation meetings and in the revision of the materials from the perspective of UNICEF Comité Español (UNICEF Spain) and the association for the protection of children in sports “Oro, Plata y Bronce”. Thank you all for those contributions.

The campaign is structured around ten key messages that are useful for every age, with a poster that summarizes them. Prevention activities stem from them using appropriate elements from sports in each age bracket.

Activity Guide for the prevention of child sexual abuse for coaches and physical education teachers (for children aged 3 to 6).

Activity Guide for the prevention of child sexual abuse for coaches and physical education teachers (for children aged 7 to 12).

Activity Guide for the prevention of child sexual abuse for coaches and physical education teachers (for adolescents aged 13 to 17).

Guide for the detection of child sexual abuse in sports for professionals, that provides indicators of possible child sexual abuse that can be identified in sports.

Quality Standards to create safe and protective spaces for children and adolescents in sports, aimed at managers and directors of sport facilities.

Three bookmarks have been developed for each age, that can be downloaded from the images.

Ages 3 to 6.
Ages 7 to 12.
Ages 13 to 17.

I hope that you will find these materials useful for working to ensure the safety of children and adolescents in sports and to achieve that, as the campaign says, child sexual abuse stays really offside.

F. Javier Romeo
